Chapter

Nineteen

A guttural, animal snarl rips out of him.

There’s a sensation of movement, and I find myself on my back with Caspian on top of me. His eyes are blacked out, inhuman and ravenous. He’s pinning me to the bed, his cold hard weight immovable on mine.

He slides his nose along my throat, inhaling slowly.

“Your blood, Maeve…” he rumbles, his voice dark, cold, and heavy. “It’s…effervescent. Golden, like honey and sunlight. Like nothing I’ve ever tasted, human or animal.”

He pulls away and bares his teeth—his fangs have descended into twin spikes, razor-sharp needles; he nuzzles my throat again, and I feel the sharp points of his teeth against my skin, not quite pricking. “What are you?”

“I…I’m just…me.” Fear and desire tangle inside me; desire wins out, and I hook my legs around his waist, clinging to him. “I’m just a girl.”

“No, you’re far, far more. Is it possible you don’t know?”

“Know what?”

“What you are.”

“I’m not anything.”

“You are. You just don’t realize.” He trembles against me as if straining every muscle. “You should run away before I lose my will and taste you again.”

“When you…tasted me…before…” I struggle to get the words out. “It felt…incredible.”

“You aren’t safe with me, Maeve.” Those needle-sharp fangs touch my throat again, pricking but not puncturing. “I don’t know if I could stop.”

“You would…drink until I died?” I breathe, fighting hyperventilation. I’m terrified and exhilarated in equal measure. “Or…or turn me into…a vampire?”

I think that’s the first time I’ve said the word out loud.

“I would never turn you,” he growls, intensity shaking in his voice. “Not ever.”

“But you could.”

“Yes. But you wouldn’t be like me. It doesn’t work that way.” A pause. “Nor would I ever drain you.”

“Then when you say you aren’t sure you could stop, what does that mean?”

“You should stay away from me, Maeve,” he warns. “Or you just may find out.”

“I want to find out, Caspian.”

“You don’t know.”

“So tell me.”

Silence, thick and thoughtful. Finally, he growls wordlessly. Rests his head on my shoulder. Speaks slowly, his voice muffled against my body. “It’s called the mating frenzy.” A heavy pause. “Feeding is…it’s inherently sexual for us. Always. It’s biological. It’s an imperative, something we cannot control or stop. It’s…it’s all interrelated. When we select someone to feed from, our bodies secrete pheromones. They make our intended prey…want us. It triggers your human desire, your innate sexuality. Turns it on and you cannot turn it off, can’t resist it, and don’t want to. For me, the mating frenzy is more than just the need to feed and the sexual desire that comes with it. The mating frenzy is far, far more intense. And your body responds to the mating frenzy with an increased intensity of sexual arousal—more than normal, and more intense than what you’d feel if it was just me wanting to feed from you. The mating frenzy is…” he trails off, shakes his head, unable to put it into words.

Well, that makes sense of how I feel around him. “So me wanting you…it’s not me, it’s just…pheromones?”

“To a degree.
